OOS Website Content Description –

Content Management (CM) and Publish to E-mail (PTE) for the OldOttawaSouth.com Website 

Introduction

Some time ago Dave & I came up with some ideas about content management on the website. Some of them are:

• • Content Managers should be able to pick areas to manage and have certain functions available to them for the areas that they manage.
  • The website should provide the function of informing a Content Manager, via e-mail, when something changes in his/her content area. A click-through link to the new/changed content would be in the e-mail. While this makes more sense for the content areas where user-added content is allowed, it would be implemented for all areas for future flexibility.
  • Along the way this idea morphed into the idea of Publish to E-mail (PTE), where any user might be informed, via e-mail, of new content on the website.

 

Over the last few weeks Dave has been restructuring the content and content management to allow multiple managers to either share control of a content area or have exclusive control over an area. The Content Manager always shares control with the Administrator but the Administrator should only need that control to do overall site management, not content creation or edit.

Dave is also implementing the PTE and, hopefully, providing some help with connecting the creation of a content page and the linkage to that page within a sidebar.

PTE is enabled via a multi-layered control structure.

•  
  • Any change in a content area is sent to that area’s Content Manager, unless he/she has turned off the facility.
  • The Administrator must enable PTE for website users for each content area that is to be published.
  • Each user may choose the content areas that they wish to be informed about. At some point they may be allowed to choose whether they get informed of each change on the day it happens or at the end of the week.
  • When a Content Manager creates or changes a content page, he/she may decide not to publish the change to e-mail. The default is to publish it.

 

 

What is this document?

All of the above is really an introduction to the seventeen pages below. In considering PTE and Content Management I realized that we could use a good description of the website content, the sidebar links to the content and what exactly might get published to e-mail. Also, we could use e-mail aliases for each of the content areas to abstract the job from the person doing it.

So here’s my take on it. It goes from the pedestrian (cut directly from the Essential Guide) to the sublime (mapping interfaces). I have certainly been arbitrary about how I have organized things. You may wish to change them but at least you have a fully fleshed description to work from.
