Re: Replacement of Pressure Treated Lumber in the Water Play Area of Brewer Park

Dear Clive,

I am writing to inform you of a motion passed at the 19 May 2009 meeting of the Board of the Old Ottawa South Community Association concerning the replacement of pressure treated lumber which is an integral part of the water play area at Brewer Park. The motion reads as follows:

MOTION: proposed by Brendan McCoy and seconded by Greg Murphy that because of the known health hazards posed by the pressure-treated wood the OSCA Board asks that the City of Ottawa replace the walkway and fence in Brewer Park in the water play area as soon as possible with removal and replacement completed no later than Spring 2010.

MOTION CARRIED

I understand from your report to the Board on the evening of 19 May 2009 that City staff have undertaken to propose an expenditure item in the 2010 Parks and Recreation Budget that would fund the removal of the existing pressure treated wood fence and walkway in the water play area and its replacement with a suitable and safe non- pressure treated alternative. Given that the water play area is intensively used it would be best if this work could be done as soon as possible in 2010 so that the work is completed before the play area is open for use by children. I would be grateful if you could confirm to the Board that an early completion date would be possible.

On behalf of the Board and residents, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your efforts in helping to resolve this issue and for helping to ensure that the children of this community, and those disabled children from across the City who use the facility, can be assured of a safe and enjoyable play area.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Jenkin President
