For years, OOS photographer Tom Alfoldi has been taking shots of Old Ottawa South environs and events and generously providing them to the OSCAR community newspaper and the OSCA Between the Bridges website. Now he is offering a Digital Photography course this winter at the Firehall that is guaranteed to interest both newbies to the digital world and those who want to explore further than "point and shoot". The course runs from Jan. 18 - Feb. 22 on Wednesdays, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm (6 weeks) for only $89. Learn more about what the 6 week course has to offer, and how to register, here.
Tom also provides volunteer photography to a variety of other organizations, including the Canada Science and Technology Museum, the National Capital Commission, the Glebe Community Association, and several others.
He's been documenting the neighbourhood diligently, and has captured some important historical moments; most recently the demise of the 300 year old oak tree that used to grace Brighton Beach Park. Visit our Photo Gallery and you'll see plenty of your friends and neighbours at various events, with many photos taken by Tom. He has true community spirit! (Click the photo to the left to enlarge.)
Tom's once-yearly flyovers of Old Ottawa South and other downtown locations provide thrilling views of our neighbourhood and city. Click here for Old Ottawa South from Above: Some stunning shots above the city.
This view provides a panorama of most of Old Ottawa South with the exception of the far west side. The Rideau River and Riverside Drive run along the south with Bank Street stretching north to the Bank Street Bridge and Lansdowne Park. (Click the photo to enlarge.)

Alfoldi also offers digital photography services, and has been deeply involved in photography for four decades, with experience in aerial photography, satellite imagery, and underwater photography, to name just a few. He has operated his own darkroom in the past and now operates a "digital darkroom". Alfoldi's photographs have enlivened the pages of both the OSCAR print newspaper and our website from such events as OSCA Fall Fest, Winter Carnival, and other great events. You'll see many of his photographs in our Photo Gallery, too.
Recently he did a series of photographs from above our bridges: they are published in the December 2011 OSCAR and will soon appear in our photo gallery along with many others of both OOS and further into the surrounding areas. He did another flyover of the area last fall, 2011, and many of these terrific photographs will be posted on our website soon, so keep an eye out!
More samples of his work can be seen at his personal photo website here.
The Digital Photography course is a fine addition to the OSCA Programming roster and is bound to be popular, so register soon! (It sold out last year.) You can register by clicking here, selecting Adult General Interest, and then scrolling to Digital Photography.
Thanks, Tom, for the many years of generous volunteering of your time and talents to the Old Ottawa South Community Association (OSCA), and our wonderful neighbours.
