Lady Evelyn Alternative School
- Details
- Last Updated on Tuesday, 05 February 2013 19:59
Lady Evelyn Alternative School, which is situated in Ottawa East, was established in 1982. It was the first Ottawa Board administered alternative school, and was the creation of a group of local parents who were committed to a philosophy of education. These founders believed that parents are the earliest and most continuous educators of their children. Therefore they must be responsible partners, with the school, in all aspects of their children's education. Alternative schools in the Ottawa Carleton District School Board are open to everyone, and operate within OCDSB policies and provincial statutes.
The School delivers Ministry of Education-approved curriculum to mixed age classes of students from 4 to 12 years old. Field trips form an integral part of the curriculum. OCDSB-sponsored classes in music, drama and art are also available. Programs depend on the interests of students and the availability of staff and parents to run them. Because most of the students are bused, extra-curricular activities are not planned for the periods before or after school; however programs such as choir, outdoor exercises, team sports, folk-dancing, crafts, library, reading, art and French are held at lunch-time.
