At the June 2012 meeting of the NCC Board of Directors, the National Capital Commission unanimously approved the proposed design of the Rideau Canal Footbridge.
The City of Ottawa is designing a new crossing of the canal that would begin on the west-side along the multi-use pathway just north of the Ritz Restaurant and land on the east-side between Echo Drive and Colonel By Drive. The curved bridge design, with V-shaped under-deck piers, received enthusiastic support from the NCC directors.
Board members expressed concerns about safe crossings from the adjoining neighbourhoods to the canal. Intersection improvements with the driveways are to considered as part of this project.
Public consultation is planned for September 2012, with subsequent presentation to Ottawa City Council.
