Support and interest in a community garden is building in Old Ottawa South. On January 15th, nearly 20 people attended an open community meeting about our proposal to locate a community garden in Brewer Park, just south of Brewer Centennial Pool. The feedback was very positive, with nearly all attendees expressing a desire to get involved as gardeners or volunteers.
Following this, the OSCA board of directors passed a motion last week in support of establishing a garden in that location.
The garden would provide plots on a seasonal basis to members to grow their own food, and would also have sections for volunteers to grow food for donation and for children to grow and learn about plants. For future years, we're dreaming of demonstration plots, a rainwater harvesting system, and maybe even a geodesic greenhouse dome.
This initiative is being organized by myself and a handful of other gardening enthusiasts in the neighbourhood. We are currently in discussion with the city about potential site plans for the garden and are working towards final approval to use the site. We are also preparing applications for funding to set up the garden. If all goes well, we could be planting this spring.
