In recent years there have been two major, widespread emergencies that affected all of the City of Ottawa: the ice storm of 1997 and the power blackout of 2003. In this workshop you will learn steps you can take to prepare yourself for an emergency and greatly reduce the hardship and stress you might otherwise experience. Topics covered will include: hazards and threats in the Ottawa area; outline of city plans for emergencies – especially for Old Ottawa East; steps in personal emergency planning; emergency communications plans; emergency meeting places; emergency preparedness kits (home, car, portable); special arrangements for children and grandchildren; special needs persons: frail elderly and persons with disabilities; and basic first aid. You will leave with a basic outline of your own personal emergency plan.
Presenter: Larry Doshen, partner in The Zeta Group Inc., an Ottawa consulting firm specializing in risk and emergency management.
