The Carleton Cares: Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort
Carleton’s Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams will be playing the venerable Royal Military College and prior to and during both games, Carleton volunteers will be hosting a community White Elephant Sale. The Sale will start at 2:00 and will go to 10:00 pm when the men’s basketball games end. Members of the public are encouraged to donate items for the sale and attend to make purchases. You don’t have to attend the basketball games to participate. The sales tables will be in Alumni Hall which is just outside of the gym. More details will be provided in the coming days regarding this event.

The priority right now is getting the word out about collecting items for the Sale. Students, faculty, staff and community members are being encouraged to drop off gently used and unwanted household items such as cd’s, books, dvd’s and toys. (Please no clothing or large pieces of furniture - people must be able to carry it from the event).

For members of the public, items can be dropped off starting next week (Jan 18 to 22) at the Welcome Centre, which is located in Alumni Hall, which is at the heart of Carleton Athletics facilities. This is the area outside our main gym and is the entry point for our weight room and pool. You can see this building clearly from Bronson avenue.

Directions to get to Alumni Hall from Bronson are as follows:

- Take the main entrance into campus on University Drive
- Take the first left (remains University Drive)
- Take your first left – it comes quick – this brings you to Parking Lot 5.
- Drive up to the doors, park your car near the doors (you’ll be in an out quick) and walk in - the Welcome Centre is the counter halfway into the building. You can’t miss it.

All items will be priced by Carleton volunteers and proceeds will go to the Humanitarian Coalition (made up of CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Quebec and Save the Children). The organizations within the coalition have been on the ground in Haiti for many years and are currently on the frontlines providing assistance where it is needed most. Importantly, any funds raised for this particular organization will be matched with by federal government.
